Question of the Week #11

"Of all the possessions of this life fame is the noblest; when the body has sunk into the dust the great name still lives." ~Friedrich Schiller

Why were you given your particular name?

My mom called me Lindsay all day long, but my dad didn't think I was a Lindsay. He made a list of names, and Kayla was on it. My mom really liked it, so that's what they agreed on. As it turns out, Kayla was the name of a girl that my dad thought was pretty. Oh well! I like my name because I've pretty much always been the only one. (I know there are others, but none that I know).

When my mom was pregnant, she and my dad were eating dinner at JB's Big Boy. In a booth close to them was a little girl and her mom. My parents thought the little girl was so cute and her name was Amber. They decided if I was a girl, I'd be Amber. My mom doesn't like my dad's reason for my middle name, so she always told me my dad chose it so I'd remember it's the month of his birthday (June).

Um, because I'm Irish, and McKenna is an Irish name. Oh, and remember that old movie 'Somewhere In Time' with Doc. Quinn the medicine woman? That solidified the deal. Her name was Alyse McKenna, and Dad didn't like the name Alyse at all...

When my mom was in High School she first heard the name and loved and decided that her first daughter was going to be named "sharida"! It was spelled differently when she heard it, but wanted to spell it this way.

My actual name is Mandi Jane, but no one calls me that but my dad and my close friends. The Jane came from my grandmother,Margery Jane, and the Mandi, because they thought it went well with the Jane! My grandmother passed away at 63 of Alzheimer's. I feel very privileged to carry her name.

Apparently there was some girl that was in my Mom's primary when she was young that was named Cheree. Ever since then, she has liked the name. When my Grandmother passed away, we were going through some old programs she had saved--one was a primary program from my Mom's younger years. In it was the girl's name, spelled Chyree. My Mom exclaimed, "That's how she spelled it!" Then, she jokingly said, "Do you want to change how you spell your name?" Um, no. Not this late in the game. (Besides, I'm a firm believer in spelling names as properly as possible.) Which reminds me of another story--my Dad's name is Allen. He spelled his name "Allan" until later he found out that on his birth certificate it was spelled, "Allen." To this day, my Aunt still spells his name "Allan." So, all you Mom's out there, make sure you're spelling your kid's names right!

Oh, and to add a little funny fact about my name...

I guess I was a klutz when I was a kid because she gave me the nickname, 'Grace.'

Also, my name on my first birth certificate was spelled, 'Makena' (I think that is just a gross way to spell it)

The nickname stuck and when the papers where finalized for the adoption (my mom adopted me when she married my dad) my name was changed to 'McKenna Grace'

So now I'm less white trash I guess...

Eesh, I'm retarded, 'she' being my mom gave me the nickname 'Grace.'

Rebecka said...

All of my brothers and sisters have family names. I think when I was born my parents hadn't chosen a name for me and my dad just said she looks like a Rebecka. So that's what I got: different spelling and no middle name. My younger sister is named after my dad's grandma Sara Jane Howarth and my mom's grandma Sarah Jane Howard. I've always been Jealous.
